They say that you can't go against natural progression for long. Was Nitish-Lalu alliance was unnatural? But the answer to this question is quite unnecessary. Any shift in the political paradigm is based on the collective good of the future of the people it serves. The Bihari brothers spoke of a future that felt both holy and promising. Bihari vs Bahari saw a great emotional upsurge among the people and they voted accordingly.
The results spoke of a trust that people showed in Nitish and Lalu's collective leadership. Though Lalu got the most number of seats i.e. 80, he still chose Nitish as the CM of Bihar. Lalu's son Tejashwi Yadav was surmounted as the Deputy Chief Minister. RJD-JDU workers found themselves in the uncharted territory of Harmony with each other. But after the period of 20 months, the love affair came to end like every other story.
Democracy is all about respecting the mandate of the people, and not hijacking it for the political gains. But the recent happenings in Bihar politics have summed up the priorities of our politicians.
BJP formed governments in Goa & Manipur even after losing the elections. The trend continued in Bihar. But we are not talking about BJP here, it's the JDU chief's decision to step down as the CM of Bihar only to reclaim it in less than 24 hours, we are talking about.
Nitish broke the alliance with RJD on the grounds of alleged corruption purported by Tejashwi. Nitish said that he can't tolerate corruption under the garb of 'Secularism'. He further added that Tejashwi was given enough chances to explain but he Deputy CM didn't cooperate. On the other hand, Tejashwi rues the fact he wasn't given any chance to explain and he is being made a scapegoat in this whole fiasco. Tejashwi further blamed Bhartiya Janta Party for motivating Nitish Kumar to undertake this big of a decision.
Tejashwi cries foul while Nitish is the CM of Bihar again. Nitish may have had problems in dealing with RJD but his decision of taking support from BJP to form a coalition government came out as an absolute shocker. Resigning from the post is a matter that is completely different from taking support from a party that he termed 'communal', just a few months ago. Even if Tajashwi Yadav indulged in corruption, Nitish's move will go down in history as the treachery of utmost degree.
Lalu Yadav feels betrayed. He looked visibly distraught when he addressed the media late in the evening. He may have had his differences with Nitish in the past but he was the person who provided Nitish with the support of his 80 MLAs to retain the chair of Chief Minister.
Everybody in the opposition is now saying that Nitish could have just stepped down from his position. But he instead chose to take the oath with the support of BJP in less than 24 hours. This speaks a lot about Nitish Kumar as a politician than BJP's tactic of acquiring yet another state.
Nitish was the symbol of hope for the leaderless opposition in India. Ram Chandra Guha even claimed that he is the only person who can counter the belligerence of BJP and prove to be an able force to guide India to new heights. But now with this paradigm shift, does he still hold that credibility? We are not sure.
