The third Rajya Sabha seat from the Gujarat State Assembly provided the nation with a lot of entertainment as the drama unfolded in the most spectacular fashion. Sonia Gandhi's close confidant and senior Congress leader Ahmed Patel survived the onslaught of BJP strategists and Congress detractors. He managed to secure the revised target of 44 votes after the election commission disqualified two Congress detractors.
With the growing anti-establishment sentiment in the state, Gujarat could prove to be an important game-changer state for Congress. In the times like these, losing a senior leader could have proved to be suicidal.
Earlier 6 Congress leaders broke away from the party under the detractor-ship of the senior leader Shankarsinh Vaghela. But the real help came from the election commission's announcement of the dismissal of votes of 2 Congress MLAs who rebelled against Mr Patel and voted for his opponent.
In the early hours of the morning, Ahmed Patel tweeted his victory with 'Satyamev Jayate'.
With the victory, Congress still remains a big influence in 'the upper house' or 'the house of elders'. As a precursor to the upcoming 2017 State assembly election in Gujarat, this victory comes out as a huge morale boost for the Congress party.
With Amit Shah in the Rajya Sabha for the first time and Smriti Irani elected again, the BJP has become the biggest party in the Rajya Sabha as well. The Gujarat politics will remain in focus this year due to the impending assembly election in 2017. Now we'll have to wait and anticipate, what more comes out of this great churning.
