India’s grand old party, The Indian National Congress, is seen struggling for the existence now. The party which was the vanguard of the freedom struggle and fought unanimously for a free India is fighting for its presence in the political domain.
The assembly results recently have even more limited the reach of the Congress. The party was badly smashed in the past assembly and Lok Sabha elections, but it seems it hasn’t learned any lessons from the defeats. Congress has now become that notorious or negligent student of the class who never does the homework even after rebukes.
The BJP’s attempt to portray Congress as the corrupt party is near to successful. The party has to now wake up on the alarm it was procrastinating before the BJP sweeps it clean and makes India Congress mukt.
The party cannot reap the fruits of past and cling to the dynastic success. It has to seriously restructure the party.
Congress has had a rainbow identity in the past, which was known to embrace contrasting ideologies. It can refurbish itself with that same identity and fight BJP and its hardline ideologies with it.
In the time of Indira Gandhi, congress had the motto of garibi hatao which helped her win the then elections. It needs to come up with such strong agenda in the future elections. And it cannot happen until the agenda is disseminated and carried by a powerful leader, which right now Congress lacks. The country has surely not accepted Rahul Gandhi has the flag bearer of the party, so it has to search for a strong party face like the Modi has become of his(party). Maybe the party has to be set loose from the Gandhian family now.
The party’s revival will definitely take time, but it is imperative that it retrieves. The rebirth of the party is much more important for India than it is for Congress itself. A single largest party, with Hindutva ideology, is dangerous for the country. The revival of Congress is thus necessary for a secular India.
